|

| I just went to a liberal Novus Ordo priest for confession. After listening to him tell me that I was scrupulous for maintaining certain grave offenses against purity and sobriety were mortal sins, he gave me absolution in the following manner: "Remember God loves you, and I absolve you, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit". Was I absolved of my sins? According to the modern Catechism it says that the words of absolution are much longer: "God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of His Son has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". Now I can't rest assured that my sins were forgiven and am in a bad mood. Should I reconfess my sins to a more conservative priest? |

Form wise, unfortunitely he did stray and that's illicit. However, since the words "I absolve..." are there, it's valid as those are the main words needed for valid form.
Though I'd try avoiding this priest in the future... |

Validity is very doubtful, IMO, not only as to form (words), but as to intention for seeming to fail to recognize mortal sins as such. How can a priest form the intention to do what the Church does, in this case absolve sin, when he doesn't believe that any sins have been committed?
Stay away from the Novus Ordo. Could it be any more obvious that it's a terrible danger to your salvation? |

the Form required for validity of the Sacrament of Penance is as follows:
Ego te absolvo a Peccatis tuis: In Nomini Patris et filli et Spritus Sancti Amen.
Now of course the word "amen" would not change the meaning of teh text if it were ommitted for whatever reason, forgetfulness of teh priest or if he was shot while giving absolution or whatever. The point is as long as those words are present and teh priest intends to do what the Church does, it doesnt matter what his views are, if he classifies every sin wrong, its not your problem, you supply the matter in that sacrament (your sins) and he supplys the form (the words) and you BOTH supply the intent (you must make a good and humble confession with at least imperfect contrition and he must intend to do as the church does for MINIMAL intent) naturally it is best to know the priest at least intends to do what the church does, alot of priests down here in miami have their own ideas though about what the church is and what it does though so in my case im typically left with going to independant and sspx priests. But if you can find a good priest at the Indult or even an older nouvs ordo priest whom you know can form sacramental intent (minimal at the least) when absolving...THEN GO FOR IT! it is no more valid if it comes from a sinner or a saint.... |
