The sanctuary lights and candles are lit. The bell is rung and the priest approaches the altar with the veiled chalice. On top of the chalice is the paten containing the unconsecrated host. The chalice is placed in the center of the altar and the Missal to the right (Epistle) side with colored markers or ribbons indicating the changeable sections of that day's Mass. The priest makes the sign of the cross symbolizing that the Mass is to be in the name of The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. This will be done over 50 times throughout the Mass. Psalm 42 was originally sung during the Mass of the Catechumens who marked their rebirth by being baptized on Easter Sunday. It represents the spiritual youth of baptism, the altar of God and a longing to be in His presence and sanctuary.
