CONFITEOR (Mea Culpa)


As culpable sinners, each of us (including the priest) are unworthy of the mercy of our Lord. We in turn, show adoration, thanks and sorrow for our shortcomings while we His children solemnly ask Him to watch over and keep us.

As Christians, we realize that in God's eyes there is little differentiation between the world we exist in now and that beyond it. The saints in heaven live within God's creation just as we on earth, which means we are in as much in communion with they, as we are with those here on earth.

We ask for their prayers as we pray for each other.

 

•Bowing down low,  the priest says:                      

P:  Confiteor Deo omnipotenti,    		P: I confess to almighty God,  

beatae Mariae semper virgini,     		to blessed Mary ever virgin,  

beato Michaeli archangelo,        		to blessed Michael the 

beato Joanni Baptistae,           		archangel,  to blessed John 

sanctis Apostolis Petro et        		the Baptist,  to the holy 

Paulo,  omnibus Sanctis et        		apostles Peter and Paul,  to 

vobis fratres,  quia peccavi      		all the saints,  and to you, 

nimis cogitatione,  verbo,       		 brethren,  that I have sinned 

et opere:  (The priest strikes    		exceedingly in thought,  word,  

his breast three times,           		and deed: (The priest strikes 

saying:)  mea culpa,  mea         		his breast three times saying:)  

culpa,  mea maxima culpa.         	through my fault,  through my

•The priest signs himself,  saying:                           

P:  Indulgentiam,  `†´            		P: May the almighty and 

absolutionem et remissionem       	merciful Lord grant us pardon, 

peccatorum nostrorum,  tribuat    	`†´ absolution,  and remission 

nobis omnipotens et misericors    	of our sins.

Dominus.                          

S:  Amen.                         		S: Amen.

•Bowing slightly,  the  priest continues:                   

P:  Deus tu conversus             		P: Thou wilt turn again,  O 

vivificabis nos.                  		God,  and quicken us.

S:  Et plebs tua laetabitur in    		S: And Thy people will rejoice 

te.                              		 in Thee.

P:  Ostende nobis,  Domine,       	P: Show us,  O Lord,  Thy 

misericordiam tuam.               		mercy.

S:  Et salutare tuum da nobis.    		S: And grant us Thy salvation.

P:  Domine exaudi orationem       	P: O Lord,  hear my prayer.

•Going up to the altar,  the   priest prays silently:           

P:  Aufer a nobis,  quaesumus     	P: Take away from us our 

Domine,  iniquitates nostras:     		iniquities,  we beseech Thee, 

ut ad Sancta Sanctorum puris      	O Lord;  that,  being made 

mereamur mentibus introire.       		pure in heart we may be worthy 

Per Christum Dominum nostrum.     	to enter into the Holy of 

Amen.                             		Holies. Through Christ our 

                                  		Lord.  Amen.

•He bows down over the altar,  which he kisses, saying:                           

P:  Oramus te,  Domine per      		P: We beseech Thee,  O Lord, 

merita sanctorum tuorum,          		by the merits of those of Thy 

quorum reliquiae hic sunt et      		saints whose relics are here,

omnium sanctorum:  ut             		and of all the saints,  that 

indulgere digneris omnia          		Thou wouldst vouchsafe to
