"Introit" means to
introduce or to enter. The Introit is a Psalm that introduces the mass.
The
Introit has its roots in the Psalms that were sung by choirs as the
procession of priests and clergy would enter the church, beginning
the mass of the yet unbaptized catechumens.
From the
Epistle side of the altar, the priest reads the specific
Introit for the Mass being celebrated that day. After he is
done he concludes with "Glory
be to the Father and to the son and to the Holy Spirit Amen" and
proceeds to the middle of the altar.
Amen is
taken from the Hebrew term meaning "may it be as prayed".
