THE CANON OF THE MASS

Canon translates to "measuring stick" in Greek. It starts with three remembrance:. One for the church in which we ask God to accept and bless our gifts through His Son Jesus, one for the living in which we pray for for protection and peace in His Church and the last gives to God those offering the Mass to include all those present, the saints and the Blessed Mother.

The priest then begins the offering prayer (Hanc Igitur) of the Mass while holding his hands over the chalice with his thumbs overlapped in a cross representing the sins of the world that Christ took upon Himself. In times before the new and everlasting covenant, a similar gesture was made over the Lambs and other victims of sacrifice at the altar of God.

Pater,  per Jesum Christum        		and beseech Thee,  most 

Filium tuum Dominum nostrum,      	merciful Father,  through 

supplices rogamus ac petimus,     	Jesus Christ Thy Son,  Our 

uti accepta habeas,  et           		Lord,  to receive and to bless 

benedicas haec `†΄ dona,  haec    	these `†΄ gifts, these `†΄ 

`†΄ munera,  haec `†΄ sancta      		presents,  these `†΄ holy

primis quae tibi offerimus pro    		we offer up to Thee,  in the

quorum tibi fides cognita est,    		faith and devotion are known

offerunt hoc sacrificium          		sacrifice of praise,  for

THE "HANC IGITUR"                 

•The priest extends his  hands over the oblation.

cunctae familiae tuae,			receive this oblation which we 
quaesumus,  Domine,  ut		Thy servants,  and with us Thy 
       
placatus accipias:  diesque		whole family,  offer up to 

 nostros in tua pace disponas,     	Thee:  dispose our days in Thy 

 atque ab aeterna damnatione          	peace;  command that we be 

  nos eripi,  et in electorum     		saved from eternal damnation
