Tradional Catholic Latin Mass. Churches, Chapels, The Mass; The Rosary, information and Discussion forum. Society of Saint Pius X, Eastern rite, tridentine and indult locations
Mass
must be offered on an altar - Latin for "high place" - on
an altar table (1).
Imbedded in front of the altar is an altar stone (2)
which contains relics or images of saints. On the main altar is found the tabernacle
(3)which is Latin for "small inn" where the blessed sacrament is
stored. The sanctuary lamp (4)
will burn at all times signifying that Christ is present. There is always
a crucifix (5)
that should be large enough to be seen by everyone. At least two candles
made of beeswax (6),
more than two for more solemn Masses. Beeswax represents the purity of
Christ's body, the flame his soul. The altar is covered with three linen
cloths (7)
with the top cloth hanging to the floor, absorbing or catching any
of the species which may fall or spill. These cloths also bring to mind
the cloth that was used to wrap our Lord's body in his tomb. Relics and
and images of saints (8)
will also adorn the altar area.
