The Last Sundays
of Pentecost
Because the day on which
Easter Sunday falls is variable and because Advent must
begin at a certain fixed time before the Nativity, the
number of Sundays after Pentecost but before the
beginning of Advent can be anywhere between 23 and 28.
When there are more than twenty-four Sundays after
Pentecost, the Collects, Epistle and Gospel from the
Sundays after the Epiphany that were omitted as a result
of Easter falling earlier are used in the later
Pentecost Masses (with the rest of the prayers being
from the twenty-third Sunday). Hence the format of these
later Masses will differ from year to year.
The "Last Sunday after
Pentecost" Mass is always celebrated the Sunday before
the first Sunday of Advent. The "Twenty-Third Sunday
after Pentecost" Mass remains unchanged when
celebrated on the twenty-third Sunday. It is celebrated
in all years except when there are only 23 Sundays, when
the "Last Sunday of Pentecost" Mass is celebrated in its
stead.
